Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a scalp tonic containing an Arctium lappa L. root extract (ALE) on the scalp; for this purpose, clinical test was conducted in a total of 90 female college students, drawing the following conclusion. First, when the amount of microbes was measured to see the change in the number of bacteria, there was a 56.32% decrease in the number of bacteria from 2359.30 for the non-ALE treatment to 1030.51 for the treatment with 60% ALE. The 60% F-EtOH treatment led to a 21.67% decrease in the number of bacteria from 1570.02 to 1195.33 while the 60% ALE treatment led to a 43.67% decrease on average in the number of bacteria from 1851.01 to 1129.67. Second, the 60% ALE treatment led to a statistically significant decrease in sebum from 38.1 ug/cm2 to 7.9 ug/cm2 and to a statistically insignificant increase by 13.3% in moisture from 6.0 ug/cm2 to 6.8 ug/cm2. 60% F-EtOH got a -94.6% increase in sebum¡ª37.3 ug/cm2 sebum in Session 0, 5.9 ug/cm2 in the second week, and 2.0 ug/cm2 in the fourth week¡ªand 60% ALE led to a -79.1% increase in sebum¡ª37.8 ug/cm2 in Session 0, 9.2 ug/cm2 in the second week, and 7.9 ug/cm2 in the fourth week. Third, visual observation of the scalp state found that keratin and oxides blocked pores before treatment, with the dull or reddish scalp, whereas the ALE treatment led to a decrease in keratin around pores, with the scalp tone becoming light, from the second week on, and to a clear color on the entire scalp in the fourth week and the F-EtOH treatment led to an insignificant change in the second week but to a removal of keratin to some degree in the fourth week. These results demonstrate that Arctium lappa L. rich in pharmaceutical activity can be useful as an ingredient of natural cosmetics related to the scalp.
